Get your blog aggregated on sydphp.org

Why aggregate?

The Sydney PHP Group is a diverse group of developers, technologists, business owners and hobbyists in the Sydney region with skills across the spectrum. To aid in building community links, sydphp can aggregate RSS and/or ATOM feeds from community members. Entries written by members on their own sites will be displayed on the sydphp.org site, with a link back to the member’s website.
It’s a great way to reach a wider audience, get known and encourage traffic to your own site.

How do I get my blog/content aggregated?

It’s pretty simple:
Firstly, you have to be writing content that will interest PHP users in Sydney. Secondly, your blog/site should have a facility to categorise feeds somehow (usually by tagging the post/entry). This will avoid us aggregating your entire blog/site (which we don’t want to do).

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Write some content, tag/categorise it as “sydphp” (or a tag of your choosing)
  2. Email the organisers mailbox at sydphp.org, providing a URL to the RSS2/ATOM feed
  3. We will review it and, if it meets the requirements, include the feed in the next syndication run
  4. Your content will appear on sydphp.org with a link back to your site

Frequently asked questions

Q: I am using WordPress, how do I do this ?
A: When you tag a post “sydphp” it will appear in the feed for that tag. e.g http://example.com/tag/sydphp/feed. We can aggregate from that URL

Q: What versions of RSS and ATOM do you support?
A: RSS 2.0 and ATOM 1.0 as minimum

Q: What kind of content is acceptable ?
A: Anything that would interest PHP users and developers in Sydney – upcoming web events, PHP jobs, PHP information, PHP applications etc

Q: What kind of content is unacceptable ?
A: Anything that is not of interest to the group. This includes information about your last holiday, your favourite drinks etc etc. Posts will be removed and repeat offenders will be removed from the syndication list. In addition any feed that includes derogatory or defaming remarks will be removed immediately from syndication.

Q: Help! my posts are no longer visible on sydphp.org!
A: Your feed may have been removed or contains invalid XML. First, check your feed for XML errors. If it is valid, contact the organisers mailbox for further help.

Q: Do I retain copyright of my content?
A: Yes, but in allowing syndication of your content, you are providing a royalty free license allowing sydphp.org to display that content on the web. If you wish to remove a post/feed at any time, please contact the organisers mailbox.
If you do not wish for certain content on your site to be syndicated, please ensure that you do not tag it as the category which we are aggregating on.

Q: Will duplicate content hurt my Google rankings ?
A: Not really, Google provides some information about this to help demystify some of the assumptions. We make it clear that we are not duplicating content with intent to deceive.
