Group Update July 2009

Thanks to all those who attended the July 6th meeting at Google, it was good to see a turnout of around 30 people. Many thanks also to Pamela Fox for providing the presentation on Google's Data API and Google for catering and games. We'll have a link to the presentation notes in the near future.

As Tim mentioned at the end of the meeting, we've decided to step back from regular monthly meetings. I've always seen the group as being organised by a few people but at the same time being directed by everyone who attends or is involved online. Recently, though, the amount of energy required to provide a regular meeting place, catering and finding willing presenters has eclipsed the energy created from holding dynamic, regular meetings.
Anyone attending the July meeting would have noticed the stony silence when our regular request for presentations and participation in the group came up, something which is both upsetting to see given the time involved in meeting organisation and is obviously not the sydphp we want (surely somebody has something to say or sell - don't be shy !).

With irregular meetings, we'll be aiming to wrap a meeting around a presentation rather than pushing for a presentation at a certain meeting date. Our meeting plan will involve either high quality presenters (including you, Tony) and/or be made up of a mix of lightning talks or off-the-cuff presentations. Mixed in with these meetings we'll be organising informals at various pubs around town.

If you have an idea for a presentation, lightning or otherwise, feel free to outline it by either:
  • pushing us a link via twitter or identi.ca
  • mailing it to us: organisers _at_ sydphp.org or
  • commenting on the blog, here

We'll review it and get in contact with you to follow-up.

Presentations can include anything, provided they are related to web development and are not product spam.

In between meetings you can be part of the group by following us on twitter or identi.ca, posting work opportunities to sydphp-jobs or by getting a feed aggregated for free on sydphp.org

Thanks and stay tuned!
James
